Steve Madewell: Music

Gifts

(Steve Madewell)
2007-12-28
I wrote this song one afternoon in December during a cold heavy rain.
Our house is still somewhat sparse as we haven't replaced all of our furniture that was damaged in the flood.
I was thinking about all the hubbub of Christmas and how rich my life has been, how little I need and how good it feels to enjoy the simple gifts that are always around.
Gifts may come gifts may go
Some just fade away
I’ll never know
What makes a special gift
For me
to give to you.

Rain on the rood
Coming Down
An empty house
the hollow sound
My words echo
bouncing round and round
these vacant rooms

Why is there always
Work to do
No time for me
No time for you
Maybe I can find something true
If I sit right down

And take a moment
just a little time
Reach out my hands
clear out my mind
Let this old rain tell me
Every little thing
that I should do

To find a gift
To give to you
Something old
There’s nothing new
Feel a warm glow of this gift of love that I sing to you.

Everyday there is a special gift
for us to hold
We can pick it up and hold in our arms
Or just let it go
We all know some fine day
they won’t be coming round
anymore

So what will we do with this gift
That’s right outside the door?

Take a walk down
by the stream
Watch the water
Flow like a dream
Let the current carry
all the doubts away

‘til there is nothing left to do or say

just let our selves take hold
Of the gift
we have today.
